Management of Gingival Recession and Graft Harvesting

Non-carious cervical lesions' aetiological factors, such as chemical erosion, are also frequently associated with gingival recession. It is important to realise that factors act in combination in most cases. The combination of different treatment strategies is advised for gingival recession according to each situation. Periodontal plastic surgery is an active field of research, with several new microsurgical techniques appearing every year. Despite many variations, the use of a connective tissue graft combined with a coronally advanced flap is still the most effective procedure for root coverage. The most used donor site area referred to in the literature is the hard palate. There are two types of soft-tissue grafts: subepithelial connective tissue grafts and free full-thickness connective tissue grafts, where the connective tissue is collected without the epithelium or with the epithelium, respectively. Microsurgical, minimally invasive approaches, although technically more demanding, promote better graft vascularisation and healing.
