Photophysics and photochemistry of 1-phenyl- 2-pyrrolidinone : A case of excited state complexation

A study of photophysics and photochemistry of 1-phenyl-Z-pyrrolidlnone (PPd)indifferent solventsand temperatures using photoluminescence spectroscopy is reported here. The shift of absorption peak and dramatic decrease inthe fluorescence yield of PPd in ethanol (EtOB) with respect to methylcyclohexane (MCH) establish the hydrogen bonding with protic solvent. At very high concentration. PPd in excited state takes part in a reversible photo-reaction and produces multi-component fluorescent species.
