Abstract Electrical transport and magnetic properties of (La 0.83 M 0.17 ) 0.67 Ca 0.33 MnO 3 (M = Y and Bi) have been investigated. Experimental results show that the doped samples have obviously different electrical transport and magnetic properties; the difference cannot be interpreted only on the basis of the effect of the ionic radius 〈 r A 〉, where 〈 r A 〉 is the average ionic radii of A‐site cations. Together with the ionic radius and the electronegativity of the doping ion, the differences of electrical transport and magnetic properties between the Bi 3+ ‐ and Y 3+ ‐doped (La 0.83 M 0.17 ) 0.67 Ca 0.33 MnO 3 are discussed, in which the electronegativity has an important effect on the electrical transport and magnetic properties. Especially, the Bi‐doped sample shows an enhanced magnetoresistance with a widened temperature window, which is encouraging concerning the potential application of magnetoresistive materials.
