Abstract : The paper deals principally with slot-type hydrostatic bearings because the throttle-type give negative results. The hydrostatic bearing studied was mounted on a pump rotated by a 36-kW electric motor. Behavior of the bearing was studied in four stages from 300 to 550C: stage I, starting regime; stage II, cyclic starts and stops; stage III, bearing operation when the shaft is rotating at a third of rated rpm; and stage IV, operation with sodium at a temperature of 530-550C to determine resistance of working couples of the bearing. These are to be regarded as qualitative since the opening of the bearing for inspection could have had a negative effect on wear. Supplementary studies are required for a final evaluation of the nature of wear in the working couples. It may, however, be concluded that the hydrostatic slot-bearings operate satisfactorily in sodium pumps. A combination of the friction couples studied may be used in hydrostatic bearings for operation in liquid sodium up to 400C.
