Preparation1: To a 100 mL THF solution of dimethyl disulfide (15.7 mL, 87 mmol) was added 2 g (87 mmol) of sodium metal, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The air-sensitive sodium salt was filtered under nitrogen and dried in vacuo. Alternatively, the reagent can also be prepared by adding methanethiol to a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol.2 The solid residue obtained after evaporation of the solvent is washed with dry ether, filtered under inert atmosphere, and the solid is dried under vacuum. Physical Data: fp 27 °C, mp 88–90 °C. Solubility: highly water soluble; also soluble in various polar organic solvents like, methanol, DMSO, and so on. Handling, Storage, and Precautions: this compound is classified as a flammable solid and should be stored away from heat, flames, and hot surfaces. This is also an air- and moisture-sensitive material and should be stored under inert atmosphere. Storage is recommended in a tight container in a cool and well-ventilated place.
