The extracts of roots of both Gaillardia and Helenium species yielded mixtures of a number of esters, which were difficult to sep. The following thymol derivatives could be identified from spectral data and degradation reactions: 7-(RCO2-substituted)-8,9-epoxythymol isobutyrates, 8-hydroxy-7-(RCO2-substituted)-9-isobutyryloxythymols, 7-(RCO2-substituted)-thymol isobutyrates, 7-(RCO2-substituted-9-isobutyryloxy-8,9-dehydrothymols, and 10-(RCO2-substituted)-8,9-epoxythymol isobutyrates (where R = Me2CH or EtMeCH).
