 A sensitive period for the incorporation of a cultural meaning system: A study of Japanese children growing up in the United States |

摘要 Argues that cultural meanings mediating interpersonal peer relationships are established during a sensitive period between ages 11–25. 72 Japanese mother–child pairs living in the US were interviewed. A 2nd sample consisted of 54 children interviewed after returning to Japan from the US. A number of returnees had internalized American meaning systems so deeply that they no longer felt comfortable in Japanese society. Cultural meanings are a salient part of self only when they are linked to the affective surroundings. Children crossing a cultural boundary during the sensitive period experience greater psychological strain when confronted by different cultural meaning systems than do younger children for whom cultural meanings have little potency. Meaning systems learned in Japan before the sensitive period tend to lose motivational force if children interact long enough with US peers.
