The kinetics of anodic oxidation of nitrite ion in a 1−3 wt % NaCl aqueous solution using in situ electrogenerated HClO was studied. The experimental results indicate that the nitrite ion oxidation is mainly affected by both the concentrations of NaCl and NO 2 - . The derived reaction rate equation can be employed to describe the behavior of the nitrite and Cl - ions when the NaCl concentration is in the range of 0.17−0.51 M and the NO 2 - concentration is lower than 20 mg/L. Theoretical analysis correlates with the experimental results. The oxidation of NO 2 - was found to be an indirect oxidation reaction of NO 2 - with the active mediator oxidant, HClO, produced from the oxidation of Cl - on the anode.
