Sulfuric Acid and Sulfur Trioxide

Abstract Sulfuric acid, an important article of commerce since the mid‐1700s, is one of the largest‐volume basic chemicals in the world. It is used in a wide variety of applications, including production of basic chemicals, steel, copper, fertilizer, fibers, plastics, gasoline, explosives, electronic chips, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. Sulfuric acid is typically less costly than other acids and can be readily handled in steel or common alloys at normal commercial concentrations. Sulfuric acid, oleum, fuming sulfuric acid, and the anhydride sulfur trioxide are discussed. The contact processes for sulfuric acid manufacture are discussed, as are the equipment necessary and the corresponding materials of construction. Safe handling practices are given.
