G ouT and gouty arthritis are not oddities; the disease has a sufficiently high incidence to justify consideration in any discussion of joint disorders. Although there are several terms that apply to the condition, gout is the basic one; it encompasses all features of this metabolic disturbance. Gout implies an increased concentration of uric acid in blood and body fluids, deposits of sodium urate in joints, and at least one attack of articular distress.
