How the supporting structure deformation in excavation of a deep foundation pit in Guangzhou affects the adjacent metro tunnel was simulated by FEM,and then the simulated and measured results were compared and analyzed. The result shows that the lateral displacement of the supporting structure for the foundation pit causes not only lateral displacement against the adjacent metro tunnel, but also certain vertical displacement, and the displacement increment is mainly contributed by the vertical deformation. The deformation increment of metro tunnel in operation increases with the supporting structure deformation of the foundation pit newly constructed, wherein the displacement variation on the tunnel top is greater than that on the bottom, and the deformation of the side close to the supporting structure is greater than that of another side far away from the supporting structure. It is suggested that effective measures should be taken to control the lateral deformation of the supporting structure so as to prevent from too large vertical deformation of the existing metro tunnel and ensure the absolute safety of the metro operation.
