A General Survey of Focused Study

A summary of recent achievements concerning the study of focus on the Chinese language is made in this essay. It consists of 4 parts: 1. The character of focus. As it is pointed out, that focus is mainly on expressing the speaker's attitude. It is different from another linguistic concept emphasis. 2. Focus and presupposition. The essay presents different interpretations of the relationship between focus, the corresponding presupposition and its background. 3. Focus on Pragmatics. Comments upon focus markers, sentence order and syntactic cases are made in the essay. 4. The test of focus. Some experimental methods for focus by some scholars are mentioned in the essay. 5. Remaining arguments. To make a further study of focus of simple sentences, it is necessary to study the focus of compound sentences.
