Abstract Plastic food wraps, commonly made from polyethylene and PVC, have raised significant environmental and health concerns due to their non-biodegradability and potential to release harmful chemicals. This study proposes an eco-friendly alternative by developing biodegradable food wraps derived from natural aloe vera gel, enhanced with chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to improve mechanical and antimicrobial properties. The films were prepared by blending aloe vera gel with chitosan, PVA, and selected additives, followed by casting and controlled drying. While the mechanical performance of the films remained moderate and not significantly superior to other biopolymers, their antibacterial activity was notably enhanced. The composite film containing aloe vera–chitosan–PVA exhibited a 14 mm inhibition zone against Escherichia coli , outperforming chitosan-only films. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) tests further confirmed a 40% improvement in antimicrobial efficiency when PVA was added, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus . Preliminary preservation tests on fresh produce indicated that the bioactive films helped reduce microbial spoilage and extended shelf life without the use of chemical preservatives. These results demonstrate the potential of aloe vera–based biopolymer wraps as effective antimicrobial packaging, particularly in short-term food storage. Given their natural origin, biodegradability, and enhanced antimicrobial performance, these films represent a promising step toward replacing conventional plastic food wraps with safer, eco-friendly alternatives, especially in regions with abundant aloe vera and chitosan resources like Vietnam.
