Introduction to A Research Agenda for Gentrification

The volume argues that the future of gentrification research should be accomplishing the end of gentrification. Much of the historic debate in the gentrification literature has been focused on what causes gentrification, the extent to which gentrification leads to displacement, and whether or not particular developments and policies count as gentrification. This volume takes as its starting point that displacement is the central experience of gentrification, and therefore, that gentrification is something to contest. The chapters in this volume argue for a research agenda for gentrification that is focused on this contestation and offer strategies of resistance. This focus allows us to rethink who and what the city is for, working toward the adequate provisioning of all urban neighborhoods that will make gentrification obsolete.
