Phenolic Compounds from Marine Organisms and Their Biofunctional Properties

Polyphenols are a diverse group of bioactive compounds found abundantly in various marine sources, including microalgae, macroalgae or seaweeds, corals, sponges, mollusks, and marine microbes. The unique marine environment provides a rich source of polyphenols with distinct chemical structures and properties. These compounds have gained significant attention due to their biofunctional properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiobesity, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anticancer, and other activities. Efficient extraction methods of polyphenols from different marine organisms help in utilizing them for diverse applications like food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic industries. The main goal of this book chapter is to direct attention to the sources, classification, and biofunctional properties of marine polyphenolic compounds.
