Commentary on “Pharmacological profile of asundexian, a novel, orally bioavailable inhibitor of factor XIa”: Small molecule factor XIa inhibitor asundexian allows for safer anticoagulation
Blood coagulation is essential to maintain vascular integrity at injury sites (hemostasis), but also contributes to thromboembolic vascular occlusions. Thrombosis occurs both in arterial and venous vessels resulting in myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and deep‐vein thrombosis. Thromboembolic diseases represent a major medical burden leading to disability and accounting for one in four deaths worldwide. Clearly, novel innovative therapeutic strategies for prophylactic and acute interference with coagulation mechanisms that drive thrombosis are urgently needed.
