ON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COLLEGE STUDENTS’ FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY,COGNITIVE STYLE AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE PERFORMANCE

Objective To study the distributed characteristic of foreign language anxiety in cognitive style as well as the influence on foreign language performance among college students.Methods A totla of 454 college students were investigated with the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale(FLCAS) and Embedded Figures Test(EFT).Results the level of foreign language anxiety of the male was significant higher than that of the female.There was no significant difference between art students and science students in foreign language anxiety.The foreign language anxiety level of field-independent students was significant higher than that of field-dependent students.There was significant positive correlation between the foreign language anxiety and cognitive style while negative correlation between the fereign language anxiety and the foreign language performance(P0.01).Conclusions The high level of foreign language anxiety of field-independent students hinders their foreign language learning,so it’s necessy to develop target-oriented activity in English teaching according to their cognitive style.
