Objective To investigate the possibility of hair follicle induction of bilayered skin substitute reconstructed by cells from human hair follicle. Methods Composite chitosan bilayered skin substitute was reconstructed with dermal papilla cells and outer root sheath cells. Its histologic characteristics was investigated in vitro and after transplantation onto rats. Results Composite chitosan bilayered skin substitute reconstructed by dermal papilla cells and outer root sheath cells had closer arrange of epithelium cells and took outstanding cornification, epithelium cords linked with epidermis could be seen in dermis. But there was no certain hair follicle-like structure formation in vivo. Conclusion With limited cell culture technology, hair follicle induction can not be taken true by skin substitute at present.
