Analysis of familial history in Chinese patients with androgenetic alopecia

Objective: To explore whether the family history of androgenetic alopecia(AGA) is related with the pattern of hair loss, age of onset, severity of hair loss and therapeutic effect by using the modified basic and specific(BASP) classification. Methods: AGA outpatients were collected from January 2013 to December 2014 in the hair disease clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. The patients were classified by the status of alopecia with modified BASP classification and grouped by the family history. All results were analyzed by the statistical software SPSS 22.0. Results: The positive rate of AGA family history in the male patients was higher than that in the female patients significantly. Basic pattern of alopecia had a significant genetic predisposition between father and son. The severity of AGA in the male patients with family history was more serious than those without family history, while the influence of family history on the hair loss was less in the female patients. The age of onset of the patients with family history was younger than those without family history. The family history had no effect on the therapeutic effect of AGA. Conclusion: The earlier the onset of the disease in the patient with family history, the more severe is the hair loss. The effects of the family history of different families and different levels of kinship on the pattern of alopecia and severity of hair loss are different. The influence of the family history on different genders is also different.
