Molecular biology is considered by some to be a hybrid of biochemistry and cell biology. It is the study of biology in terms of the interactions and interconversions of molecular structures. The goal is to understand biology in chemical terms. In 1945, William Astbury gave us the term “molecular biology,” referring to the study of the chemical and physical structure of biological macromolecules. Still, molecular biology encompasses more than biochemistry and cell biology. Molecular biology actually crosses many boundaries including those of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, organic chemistry, and physics. Molecular biology as it stands today is a new science. One may not be able to pinpoint the time of conception of this new science, but many would include the ground breaking contributions of McLeod, Avery, Watson, and Crick.
