A new genus of Chiasmodolini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Eurymelinae) from Puerto Rico based on three species previously included in Idiocerus Lewis, 1834

Idiocerus Lewis, 1834 currently includes 32 species recorded from the Neotropical Region, distributed in Bolivia, Brazil, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, and Puerto Rico. However, these species have not yet been revised in light of the newer classification for eurymeline leafhoppers and most likely should be transferred out of Idiocerus (Idiocerini). In this paper, we propose a new genus, Carinocerus gen. nov., to accommodate the three Idiocerus species from Puerto Rico: Carinocerus maricensis (Caldwell, 1952) comb. nov., Carinocerus myrciae (Caldwell, 1952) comb. nov., and Carinocerus parvulus (Osborn, 1935) comb. nov.. Based on male genitalia characters, these species do not belong to Idiocerini, but rather represent a new genus of Chiasmodolini. The male of C. maricensis comb. nov. and the female of C. parvulus comb. nov. are described herein for the first time. We expand the known distribution of these species in Puerto Rico and provide the first description of the male of C. maricensis comb. nov..
