Basic Structure and Function of the Neonatal, Infantile, and Childhood Skin

Skin undergoes dynamic changes after birth, which continues into infancy. Passing through childhood, as the adolescent skin matures into adult skin it is further influenced by various hormonal and environmental factors. The unique structure, function and composition of pediatric skin are discussed in this chapter in the three stages of neonatal, infantile and childhood skin. This basic knowledge lays down the foundation of better understanding of physiological and pathological aspects of dermatological diseases affecting the pediatric population, discussed further in the book.
