Single crystals of ammonium cerium(III) bis(sulfate) tetrahydrate were grown by slow evaporation of an aqueous sulfate solution containing NH4+ and Ce3+. The crystal structure is isotypic with other ammonium rare earth sulfates of the type NH4RE(SO4)2·4H2O where complete single-crystal stucture analyses have already been performed for RE = La, Sm and Tb. The Ce3+ cation is coordinated by nine O atoms, six of which belong to SO4 groups and three to H2O molecules. The rare earth cation is in the centre of a distorted tricapped trigonal prism. The structure is held together by moderate hydrogen bonds between the tetrahedral SO42− and NH4+ groups and the water molecules.
