Smelling Incense to Know People——Analysis of the Incense in "The Tale of Genji"

Incense was brought to Japan by China in 754 A.D.,after which incense becomes one of the symbols of Japan's palace culture.There are a lot of works about incense in Heian period.The Tale of Genji is one of these works.This paper analyzes incense which appears in The Tale of Genji in order to analyze the status and personality of the characters.
