A novel technique for electrostatic spraying of liquid fuels is described. An experimental study of a combination of a conical metal electrode and a cylindrical electrode with a corresponding conical hole and a small-diameter nozzle from which the liquid is ejected is described. A negative high voltage is applied to the conical electrodes, and the variables are the angle of the cone, electrode distance, nozzle diameter, and whether or not a ring electrode is used outside the nozzle. It is found that a corona discharge that occurs on the top of the cone is effective for charging the liquid drops. When a cone angle of 60 degrees , an electrode distance of 1.5 mm, and a nozzle diameter of 0.5 mm are used, widely spread electrostatic spraying occurred with fine droplets of about 50 mu m diameter. A higher flame temperature and lower power for pumping the liquid fuel are realized. To improve the burning characteristics of a low-volatility fuel having a higher ignition temperature, a higher volatility fuel is added before spraying.< >
