Nitrogen-rich propellant materials are important for high-performance propellants that are of lower signature, higher burning rate, and higher energy content compared to currently used materials. One extremely promising nitrogen-rich propellant material is 3,6-bis(1 H -1,2,3,4-tetrazol-5-yl-amino)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (BTATz). In this chapter, we review the synthesis of this compound, its energetic properties compared to other propellant compounds as well as the performance and analytics of BTATz propellants compared to more traditional propellant formulations. We also investigate the mechanism of thermal decomposition when formulated with various other energetic materials including hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW).
