The high cost of energy prompted General Electric Company's introduction of the Film/Foil power capacitor in January 1979. These new all-film dielectric power capacitors save energy by reducing internal losses to half those of capacitors using conventional Film/Paper dielectric. The change to all-film required a new means to assure impregnation. To replace the wicking action of the paper, both embossed foil and Hazy (R) film are used to enhance liquid flow. The unique embossed foil pattern and the Hazy (R) film's textured surface are both General Electric Company developments. The Film/Foil design also has a new impregnant, Dielektrol III. The base liquid, phenyl xylyl ethane, was chosen to be the best of several liquids suitable for impregnating the all-film dielectric. It has been established an environmentally acceptable capacitor fluid. This presentation will deal with the physical and chemical properties of the film, foil, and liquid and the electrical properties of the capacitors containing them.
