Lipid droplet,a cellular organelle for lipid storage,is closely associated to obesity and metabolic diseases.Increasing studies suggest that lipid droplets can interact with other cellular organelles including mitochondria. The abnormal interaction between lipid droplets and mitochondria might relate to the formation and development of type II diabetes through inducing insulin resistance. Here, the authors summarized the studies on lipid droplet proteomics, lipid droplet and mitochondrial morphology, some important proteins involved in the interaction, and the effects of aerobic exercise to the interaction.Combined with the work in their lab,the authors discussed the potential molecular mechanism of the interaction and speculated how the interaction would affect insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in skeletal muscle cells.
