Bisphenol A (BPA) has been received a lot of attention because of their endocrine disrupting effects on animals including human being. Since some white rot fungi isolated in Korea showed very high degrading capability on various recalcitrant aromatics, we investigated biodegradation of BPA by the immobilized white rot fungi. BPA of 100 ㎎ 1?¹ was completely degraded by the immobilized Trametes versicolor and Irpex lacteus in 2 and 3 days of incubation, respectively. Biodegradation rate of 100 ㎎ 1?¹ BPA by the immobilzed mycelia of T. versicolor (2.5 g wet wt) in alginate bead was higher than that in a suspended culture. Immobilization efficiency of laccase which showed a major role in fungal degradation was highest at 4% alginate and 2% CaCl₂.
