Abstract Organic solar cells (OSCs) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are two great frontrunners of emerging photovoltaic technologies with flexible, lightweight, and efficient energy solutions. Regardless of significant efficiency improvements and prospering scientific progress, commercialization remains limited. This article investigates the misalignment between research activity and industrial standpoint, based on a bibliometric study of more than 28,000 research outputs and data regarding more than 100 companies. The key findings suggest that while lab‐scale performance is advancing, a lack of market trust inhibits industrial advancement. The absence of trusted business models, standardization, and weak industrial collaborations worsens the commercialization gap. These suggestions on closing the gap are through collaborative efforts toward standardization, de‐risking scaling pathways, and revision of market success.
