摘要
Local ablation of solid tumors is an emerging cancer treatment. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a recent experimental technique that is less invasive and morbid compared to conventional therapies. HIFU may be indicated as a primary, salvage, or palliative therapy. Recent efforts within oncology have focused on improving outcomes of previously researched applications and techniques. This article aimed to review the clinical application and evidence of the therapeutic use of HIFU for diseases such as prostate, bone, liver, breast, kidney, brain, and pancreatic cancer. The applications of HIFU are currently limited by tumor location, as well as neighboring anatomical boundaries and physiological processes. Although clinical evidence of HIFU effectiveness has been accumulated, this technique requires further development to significantly alter the standard of care for tumors.
