Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair in Disproportionate Secondary Mitral Regurgitation

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is classified as primary or secondary. Primary (or intrinsic) MR results from an intrinsic structural abnormality of the mitral valve apparatus. Secondary (or functional) MR results from a change in left ventricle (LV) morphology, leading to leaflet tethering and malcoaptation. Transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVr) can percutaneously correct MR in patients with favourable anatomy. Recent evidence demonstrated that patients with secondary MR responded variably to TMVr, yielding benefit in some cases but not others.
