3,5-Dinitro-salicylaldehyde(m.p. 57℃-59℃),5-bromo-salicylaldehyde(m.p. 104℃-105℃), 3-nitro-5-bromo-salicylaldehyde (m.P.124℃-127℃) and 3-bromo-5-nitro-salicylaldehyde (m.p. 148℃-149℃) were synthesized from salicylaldehyde via either nitration or bromination. The yields were 76.0%, 81.8%, 63.0% and 80.5% respectively. Eleven schiff-bases were prepared via condensation of ethylenediamine with salicylaldehyde derivatives. The structures of these schiff-bases were characterized by ~1H-NMR. The relationships between the substituted groups on the rings and their (λ_(max)) were investigated by UV-Visible Spectra.
