Synthesis of 4-Carboxy-p-terphenyl

Carboxy p terphenyl was synthesized from p terphenyl and acetyl chloride. p Terphenyl and acetyl chloride(molar ratio 1 0∶1 25) reacted in at 45 ℃ for 5 h in nitrobenzene in the presence of AlCl 3to give 4-acetyl- p -terphenyl(Ⅰ)(separated by sublimation,180-200 ℃/80 Pa) in 76% yield.Ⅰ was oxidized by sodium hypobromite at 40-50 ℃ for 2 h to from 4 carboxy p terphenyl(mp. 315-316℃) in 78% yield. Its structure was confirmed by 1H-NMR.
