Supporting Roles of Grandparents in Holding the Family Together

The role of grandparents is ever changing in our society. As family life changes and faces its own unique challenges, grandparents play a unique role in providing support to their family of origin. This paper offers a perspective of what it means to be a grandparent today in Newfoundland’s changing society. It chronicles the experiences of three grandparents and the role they play in their children’s and grandchildren’s lives. Grandparents play a different role today than they have in any other time.
