This paper presents a methodology for evaluating the probability of catastrophic failures in process systems controlled by standby safety systems. An algorithm for solving large systems is also presented. The results of the Markovian analysis are compared to those of the classical Event Tree-Fault Tree methodology. A sensitivity analysis has been performed and the results of both methods have been compared for low and high failure rates.
