Abstract The effect of the following factors on the mechanism and rate of pitting corrosion is discussed: composition of the corrosive medium, composition and structure of the metal or alloy, temperature, pH, heat treatment, cold working, and structure of the oxide film on passivated metals. The kinetics of pit growth, sites susceptible to pitting, methods for studying the tendency to pitting and various theories of pitting corrosion also are discussed.
