Objective To investigate the correlation between the Helicobacter pylori(Hp) in saliva and gastrointestinal diseases.Explore the value of the salivary detection for helicobacter pylori. Methods 163 patients with gastric symptoms(case group)and 27 asymptomatic patients(control group)were selected. The saliva samples from both groups were obtained for detection of Hp by culture in vitro. The pH values and urease activity of the Hp clinical isolaters from the saliva samples were measured. Results The Hp detection rate was 14.72%(24/163) in case group while 66.67%(18/27) in control group. The urease activity of the 24 Hp clinical isolaters in case group was significantly higher than that in 18 isolaters of control group and the pH values of case group were lower. Conclusion The results suggest that there is certain diversity between the pathogenicity of Hp in saliva.Oral Hp which has higher urease activity and lower pH values may be related to the occurrence and development of gastrointestinal diseases. The salivary detection for helicobacter pylori is worthy of further study as a non-invasive,painless and safe test method.
