The local treatment of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures

Osteoporosis is a disabling skeletal disorder that is characterized by decreased bone mass and bone strength,predisposing to increase the risk of bone fracture,affecting 200 million individuals worldwide.However,osteoporosis often is untreated and unrecognized,in part because it is a clinically silent disease until it manifests in the form of fracture.At present,mainstay treatment relies on systemic medications intended to prevent diminishing bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mass.However,an adjunctive treatment strategy targets to specific areas of the skeletal system that are prone to clinically significant osteoporotic fractures.We term this strategy the treatment of osteoporosis.The local treatment of osteoporosis is a new strategy that is topical application of anti-osteoporotic drugs,promoting bone formation cytokines or biological materials.The local treatment can enhance the BMD,bone microstructure and biomechanics of the local osteoporotic bone.
