Objective To treat the patients of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) by mechanical ventilation method and to study the changes of respiratory parameters in order to explore the effect of this method. Methods Noninvasive or invasive mechanical ventilation(CPAP or SIMV mode) was used to treat 42 COPD patients with acute respiratory failure and the changes of respiratory parameters were compared before and after the treatments. Results There were obvious changes in respiratory parameters before and after the treatments. With the treatment of the noninvasive and invasive mechanical ventilation, there were significant difference in respiratory rate(RR),expired tidal volume(EV_T),minute ventilation(MV),mean airway pressure(MAP)(P0.01) compared with before the treatment. Conclusions Using noninvasive or invasive mechanical ventilation to treat COPD patients with acute respiratory failure can help COPD patients improve the function of their respiratory muscles, reduce airway resistance and lung compliance, and improve the respiratory parameters.
