Abstract Tensile tests of 6-mm-thick hot-dip galvanized (HDG) S960 specimens were performed. The study focused on room temperature but also − 40 °C cold temperature tests were performed to ensure material behavior and reliability. Microstructural characterization using a scanning electron microscopy was performed to evaluate the influence of HDG. The results showed that HDG slightly decreased the tensile strength of plain S960 specimens whereas its effect on welded joints was not significant in both room and cold temperatures.
