Hydrodeoxygenation of C4–C6 sugar alcohols to diols or mono-alcohols with the retention of the carbon chain over a silica-supported tungsten oxide-modified platinum catalyst

Sugar alcohols can be converted to mono-alcohols in good yields over a Pt–WO_x/SiO₂ catalyst without C–C dissociation, and 1,4-butanediol and 1,4-anhydroxylitol can also be produced in good yields with related systems.
