摘要
The rapid diffusion of artificial intelligence (AI), and particularly large language models (LLMs), is challenging established theories of competitive advantage by introducing non-human cognitive capabilities into the core of organizational decision-making. While existing research largely conceptualizes AI as a digital resource or an enabler of operational efficiency, this article argues that such perspectives fail to capture its deeper strategic implications. We propose the concept of “cognitive advantage” as a distinct and emergent form of competitive advantage, defined as an organization's systematic ability to perceive, interpret, and decide better than competitors through the deep integration of AI systems, proprietary data, and human judgment. Adopting an exploratory and inductive research design, the study analyzes a set of recent, illustrative cases of global firms across multiple industries—including consultancy, banking, retail, mobility, pharmaceuticals, and aerospace—that have partnered with major AI suppliers since 2023. Drawing on insights from organizational cognition, behavioral strategy, and AI research, the analysis identifies four interrelated abilities through which cognitive advantage materializes: augmented perception, superior interpretation, reduced decisional latency, and cumulative organizational learning. The article contributes to strategy and innovation research by positioning cognitive advantage as a new typology of competitive advantage that complements, but cannot be reduced to, existing frameworks such as the resource-based view or dynamic capabilities. For managers, the findings highlight the need to move beyond digital transformation toward deliberate cognitive transformation as a source of sustained competitive performance.
