Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) enable communication in an intelligent transportation system. The vehicles periodically send one-hop beacons to ensure network-related awareness among the participating agents. VANETs possess unique attributes, for example, high mobility and volatility, resulting in many challenges in their practical application. The security aspect of VANETs has been studied, and many proposals presenting various trust management schemes have been published. However, less emphasis is laid on intelligent malicious attacks. In this paper, we introduce a Bayesian-based distributed trust management scheme (BDTMS). The proposed scheme is a distributed trust scheme based on the modified Bayesian equation. The global trust value is an aggregation of interaction-based direct trust and weighted opinion-based indirect trust. The scheme is effective in defeating malicious behaviour acted by participating vehicles. Simulation results using NS-3, show the effectiveness of the BDTMS scheme when compared with the state-of-the-art scheme.
