Japanese Sword Furniture

Perhaps the word “sword” has been a deterrent to a more general interest in, and appreciation of, Japanese sword-guards and sword-fittings. European armor and arms have a background with which we are more familiar. The line and grace of the rapier and swept hilt have an artistic and sentimental appeal. Sword-fittings, however, seem by many in some way to be associated with the hilt of an ordinary sabre or the rings and chape of its scabbard; something of interest only to the soldier or military man.
