Liability and the Standares of Care

While product liability is becoming more closely defined, structure liability is not. Determining an engineer’s liability in the event of a design error is becoming more complicated by advances in technology that are not easily assimilated into practice. Minimal competence isn’t satisfactory; structural engineers should be held to higher standards. A standard of care is needed that reflects advances in knowledge but stops short of strict liability.
