A quantitative treatment of the forgotten effect in liquid thermal diffusion

Abstract The influence of the concentration gradient on the density gradient in a thermal‐diffusion column is called the forgotten effect . A modification of the theory developed by Furry, Jones, and Onsager is proposed to include the effect of the horizontal concentration gradient. A sample calculation with the system toluene‐cyclohexane shows that the equations predict the proper behavior for a forgotten‐effect system.
