Report on survey of blindness and cataract and condition after surgery in Jiaozuo Area

Objective To survey prevalence of cataract,low vision and blindness,and evaluate the visual function and quality of life(VF/QOL) in the patients with catract treated by phacoemulsification among adults aged 50 years or above in the jiaozuo area.Methods The cross-sectiona 1 study was selected for 14568 individuals aged 50 years or above in population in the jiaozuo area,from December 2009 to September 2010.they underwent standard ophthalmic assessments to determine:prevalence and causes of low vision and blindness; To survey the patients about VF and QOL at preoperational and 3 months postoperatively.Results The prevalence of cataract was 23.45％ among adults aged 50 or above and increased with age.The prevalence was 32.28％ in women,which was significantly higer than that 13.81％ in men( P ＜0.01 ).In this survey was founded retinal diseases was the second important cause of blindness.The postoperative average VF and QOL are 83.78 ± 20.37 and 88.63 ± 17.97,with no statistically significant difference between every grade group.There was statistically difference before and after surgery.Conclusion The cataract is the leading public health problem in Jiaozuo area.The initial success of prevention of blindness by cataract surgery indicates that it is important on the prevention of the age-related eye diseases,retinal diseases and glaucoma.
