Cultural Survival

This entry examines some of the concepts behind cultural survival. It defines the term and gives a number of examples, ranging from styles of dress to folkloric displays. Cultural survival plays a role both when minorities assert their rights and when they see them contained or suppressed by ruling elites. How identity relates to the sharing of cultural perceptions is described and the problems inherent in popular ideas of “traditional” and “modern” are considered.
