摘要
The transition into a prelicensure nursing program can be overwhelming as students move into a high-stakes, professional learning environment. Early experiences shape expectations, professional identity, and engagement; however, traditional orientation is often limited to logistics rather than establishing program standards. A structured nursing student orientation strategy was implemented before the first nursing course to support student success. The session focuses on 3 areas: (1) academic expectations, (2) professional behaviors, and (3) available support systems. Faculty clearly communicate grading standards, progression policies, and the level of accountability required. Expectations for professionalism—including communication, preparation, and engagement—are introduced early to align student behaviors with clinical practice standards. The session also emphasizes a shift from task completion to the development of clinical judgment. Students are encouraged to view themselves as emerging professionals and are provided with examples of expected critical thinking and accountability. Resources such as tutoring, advising, and faculty support are highlighted to reinforce that, while expectations are high, student support is available. This structured approach has resulted in improved student preparedness, more consistent professional behaviors, and fewer misunderstandings about program expectations. Establishing the tone early fosters a culture of accountability, professionalism, and success throughout the nursing program.
